For Halloween, Theresa and her family invited me to go see a live show of Rocky Horror at the Hard Rock casino. So, naturally I wanted to dress up! I’d been wanting to do Magenta for a while. However I had some difficulties in making this costume as my sewing machine is at home and my class schedule makes it next to impossible to even warrant having a sewing machine in my dorm. I had a lot of time constants. I really did want to make the whole thing, but I couldn’t and survive in school. I knew that I need a black dress shirt type dress and I need a cheap one. I looked at JcPenneys and a few other department stores online to find a dress that I found suitable for the costume. I found a few, but they were over $20. One night I wandered into Ross after class and I found the perfect dress for about $10. It was amazing!

On the few weekends I went home, I altered the dress a bit. The dress is entirely black. Magenta however has a white collar and white rolled up shirt sleeves, indicating that she has a shirt on underneath the dress. When I researched though, I found that such was not the case, but rather they had just attached those pieces to her dress to give it the appearance that she has a shirt on underneath. Which was perfect, because I planned to do the exact thing. The dress already had sleeves that were rolled up and a dress shirt type collar. I just made a larger collar and in cased the original one in between the layers of the new one. And I did pretty much the same thing for the sleeves.

I made the apron and little hat. I tried to make the apron about the same length as Magenta’s but I misjudged the length and it ended up as long as the dress. It was a pretty simple piece. I bought sheer fabric off the $2.95 rack at Hancock’s. I pleated that trim myself and it was hard to get everything to align at the waist. So, don’t look too closely at the waistband! lol. The doily hat I made with the same fabric I made the apron with (it was some non-discript nylon fabric). Over the past year I have been visiting a flea market near my house where I had accumulated an awesome collection of trims and laces. I picked out one of the lace trims I had and pleated around an oval piece of fabric. Then I sandwiched the lace with another oval that I had sewn a strip of fabric in the center of to place bobby pins. I left a hole on one side, pull out everything and top stitched the oval to close up everything.

For the shoes and stockings, Magenta wears black ankle boot heels. I don’t own anything like this, nor did I buy any. Instead, I went to a costume (drag) shop that was liquidating everything. I stocked up on stockings, I got thigh-high lace trimmed hose for the costume as well as some nylon ankle socks. I already owned some nice black heels, so I paired them with the ankle socks to give the appearance that I’m wearing ankle boots.

This was a really fun costume. I wore way too much make-up and hairspray, but it was worth it. ^_^
